UMW Men's Soccer Tops NC Wesleyan, 2-1, in Saturday Road Action

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team netted a goal in each half in topping North Carolina Wesleyan College, 2-1, on Saturday in Rocky Mount, N.C. The Eagles improve to 2-1-1 on the season.

Sophomore Gabriel Soriano opened the scoring quickly, netting a free kick at 3:29, and the Eagles held a 1-0 advantage to halftime.

In the second, the Battling Bishops found the tying score at 75:30 on a Kobi Boompong goal. Just 48 seconds later, the Eagles went back ahead to stay, as freshman Jeremy Hokenson scored on a header from Ryan Muniz.

The Bishops led in shots, 12-6, and UMW led in corner kicks, 7-2. Senior goalkeeper Matt Spencer had four saves in net for UMW, while Chris Higgins and Jordan Williams each allowed one score in splitting time for NCWC. The Eagles win their second straight aginst NC Wesleyan, and have won 12 of 20 all-time meetings with the Bishops.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Lynchburg College at 7 p.m.
