Burke's Two Scores Lead UMW Men's Soccer Past Catholic, 2-1, in Overtime on Wednesday

Senior Jacob Burke netted the game winner, his second of the game, midway through the first overtime to give the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Catholic University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the year.

After a scoreless first half, Burke gave the Eagles the lead at 72:59 on a direct free kick, but the Cardinals came right back to tie the score with a Miguel Hernandez score just 36 seconds later. The game would extend to overtime, as neither team would score again in regulation.

Burke gave the Eagles the victory with another unassisted tally at 94:57, their second overtime win of the season. Burke corralled a loose ball played through and struck the winner from outside the 18 yard line to give UMW the result.

Mary Washington led in shots, 14-11, as well as in corner kicks, 9-4. Junior Matt Spencer had six saves for the Eagles, while Zachery Tashjy had four stops for CUA.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they face Guilford College at Averett University at 4:00 p.m.
