UMW's Matt Spencer Named CAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Mary Washington sophomore Matt Spencer was named the CAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 8, 2015.

Mary Washington sophomore Matt Spencer was chosen as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after helping UMW to a 3-0 start with three straight shutouts in wins over Randolph-Macon, Eastern Mennonite and Hood. Spencer made five saves in a 2-0 season-opening win at Randolph-Macon, then made one stop in the 1-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite. He capped his stellar week with six saves in a 1-0 win over Hood on Sunday.

Christopher Newport is the lone CAC team ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Rankings at No. 7 in the nation ... CNU rookie Zachary Ballard connected on the game-winner against Neumann for his first collegiate goal. The CNU defense, led by senior goalkeeper Nolan Mann, posted a pair of shutouts in the first three games ... Guy Nabo scored a goal in all three games for Frostburg State last week. The Bobcats finished 3-0 and won the 2015 FSU Tournament thanks to Nabo's game-winner with 33 seconds remaining against Bridgewater in the championship ... Junior Riley Fisher helped Mary Washington to a 3-0 start by scoring two game-winning goals over the weekend to provide UMW with a pair of 1-0 wins. He scored in the eighth minute to lead UMW to a 1-0 win over Eastern Mennonite, and added another in the 16th minute in a 1-0 win over Hood on Sunday. The two time All-CAC selection has 15 goals for his career with the Eagles ... Marymount's Logan Cropper put together a 13-save three-game stretch for the Saints, including back-to-back six-save games in the UMW Soccer Classic over the weekend. Against Eastern Mennonite, Cropper came up big with six saves in the second half and overtime until freshman Rodney Ngoh tacked on the game-winner to give the Saints their first win of the season ... Salisbury head coach Gerry DiBartolo secured his 400th career victory in the Sea Gulls' 2-1 triumph over Merchant Marine. DiBartolo is just the 38th coach in NCAA men's soccer to accomplish the feat and just the 17th to do so at the Division III ranks. Salisbury captured its Elmer Lord Soccer Classic title for the fifth straight year with wins over Merchant Marine and Rutgers-Camden, 1-0. Senior goalkeeper Drew Staedeli allowed only two goals with 17 saves in three games last week, picking up his first shutout of the season in the final game of the Elmer Lord Classic. Senior midfielder Taylor Groginski was named Tournament MVP. Salisbury opened the year with a 2-1 triumph over Susquehanna last Tuesday ... York first-year head coach Evan Scheffey earned his first coaching win in the Spartans' season-opener last Tuesday, defeating Stevenson 4-1 at home.
