Six UMW Men's Soccer Players Gain All-CAC Status; Kilby Named CAC Coach of the Year

YORK, Pa. - The final four teams in the 2012 CAC men’s soccer playoffs - York, Mary Washington, Frostburg State and Salisbury - each placed three players on the conference’s top all-star team. But it was FSU’s senior forward Ryan Russell who took home the top trophy as the CAC Player of the Year for the second-straight season.

Russell, a two-time first-team all-star, is the third player in CAC history to win the Men’s Soccer Player of the Year award twice, joining former standouts Tony Trepal of Mary Washington (1991-92) and Jon Ports of York (2007-08).

York, which won its fourth-straight CAC playoff title, had four second-team all-stars this year to lead the conference with seven total post-season awards. The leaders for the Spartans were senior forward Antonio Bua, senior midfielder Justin Facer and junior defender Aaron Beale - all first-team all-stars - as well as second-team defender Matty Martinez, who was named the 2012 CAC Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Year.

Also earning second-team all-star recognition for the Spartans were junior forward Austin Johnson, junior defender Matt Yackel and senior goalie Jesse Derksen.

Martinez is YCP’s sixth player to be named the conference’s top rookie in the last 11 years He follows in the footsteps of Yackel, who was the Rookie of the Year in 2010. Bua picked up his third All-CAC award while Beale and Derksen were first-team all-stars in previous seasons.

Mary Washington, which played its way into the CAC title match from the fifth seed in the tournament bracket, placed junior midfielder Jake Doyle, junior defender David Heller and sophomore keeper Tyler Back on the first-team all-star squad. Second-team honors were awarded to senior forward Matt Poole, freshman forward Patrick Kelly and junior midfielder Tommy Sangbuoasy. Heller, a second-team all-star in 2011, is the only returnee on the All-CAC team.

Jason Kilby, the second-year leader of the Eagles, was selected by his peers as the 2012 CAC Coach of the Year. He joins eight-time winner Roy Gordon as the only UMW coaches to win the award.

Salisbury, a CAC finalist in each of the past two years and the top seed in this year’s championship tournament, earned first-team All-CAC nods for sophomore forward Matt Green, senior midfielder Pat Callahan and junior defender Chase Humphrey. Senior midfielder Jimmy Mundy and junior defender Larry Cornish also gained second-team recognition for the Sea Gulls. Mundy is a three-time conference all-star while Humphrey and Cornish are repeat selections from the 2011 All-CAC squad.

Bobcats joining Ryan on the All-CAC first team in 2012 are senior midfielder Shawn Baker, who is making his second-straight appearance on the all-star team, and junior defender Chris Jones.

Wesley and St. Mary’s both earned two all-star nods this season.

The Wolverines’ senior forward Joshua Chelleh repeated as a first-team All-CAC choice by the coaches and was joined on the post-season roster by second-team senior defender Pat Slinka - a first-time all-star.

SMC picked up a pair of second-team All-CAC awards by senior forward Frank VanGessel and senior midfielder Ryan Plaisance. Both Seahawks are making their first appearance on the All-CAC Men’s Soccer team.
