Senior Matt Alter and junior Kevin Murphy each scored goals to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory at Marymount University on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Eagles improve to 11-7-1 overall, and will advance to the CAC semifinals on Wednesday at Salisbury University.
The win avenges a regular season loos at Marymount for the Eagles, ranked fifth in the region this week. Alter started the scoring at 19:27 on assists from Tommy Sangbouasy and Jake Doyle. UMW held the lead at 1-0 at halftime.
UMW added an insurance tally at 68:31, as Murphy scored on an Alter assist on a breakaway. The Eagles led in shots, 15-8, and in corner kicks, 14-3. Sophomore goalie Tyler Back had three saves in goal for UMW, registering his school record-tying ninth solo shutout of the year.
The Eagles will have another opportunity to avenge an earlier defeat in the CAC semifinals on Wednesday when they visit Salisbury University at 2:30 p.m. Salisbury previously topped UMW, 2-0, this year.
