Kelly's Tally Leads UMW Men's Soccer Past Hampden-Sydney, 1-0

Freshman forward Patrick Kelly scored the game's lone goal at 48:03 as a shorthanded University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated Hampden-Sydney College, 1-0, on Saturday in both teams' season lidlifter. The Eagles played more than 56 minutes of the game a man down after a red card.

UMW carried the momentum early, and maintained possession for much of the first half. The red card came at 33:28, forcing UMW to play a man down for the remainder of the contest.

The game's lone score came when junior Nick Shepherd stole a pass, and his cross from the left deflected off a defender to Kelly, who ripped a shot into nets from 20 yards out. The Eagles led in shots, 20-9, and each team had five corner kicks.

Sophomore goalie Tyler Back had one save for the Eagles, and also snuffed out several crossing balls in the air. Blake Carrey had six saves for Hampden-Sydney.

The Eagles will face Eastern Mennonite University on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Battleground.
