UMW Men's Soccer Tops #20 Salisbury, 2-1

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team scored a pair of goals to open the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory over 20th-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-3 on the season, and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference action, while the Gulls fall to 4-1-1 and 0-1.

After a scoreless first half, junior Matt Poole (Neshanic Station, N.J., Somerville) connected for his first score of the season on a 25 yard arching shot inside the top far corner on an assist from Nick Shepherd (Palmyra, Va., Fluvanna County) at 45:50. Less than eight minutes later, junior Omar Ismail (Herndon, Va., Oakton) scored on another Shepherd assist at 53:28 to give UMW a 2-0 advantage.

Salisbury cut the deficit to 2-1 at 83:30 on a header from Trevor Sharpe, but were unable to find the tying score.

The Sea Gulls led in shots, 22-10, and in corners, seven to four. UMW junior goalkeeper Blake Weiss (Midland, Va., Liberty) had 11 saves for the Eagles, while John Vnenchak had four stops for Salisbury.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. when they visit Gettysburg College.
