UMW Men's Soccer Opens Kilby Era with 3-1 Win Over Greensboro

Freshman forward Nick Shepherd (Palmyra, Va., Fluvanna County) scored a pair of second half goals to propel the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Greensboro College on Saturday at the Battleground in the first game for new head coach Jason Kilby. The Eagles improve to 1-0 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, as sophomore Tommy Sangbouasy (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) scored unassisted at 8:10. The score remained tied through halftime, and Greensboro found a tying score at 60:43 from Stenson Croom on a throw in from Logan Paussa. But the Eagles jumped back ahead in just over one minute, as Shepherd headed in an Omar Ismail (Herndon, Va., Oakton) pass on a freee kick. Shepherd added an insurance goal on another set piece, as he headed in a Patch Owen (Chapel Hill, N.C., East Chapel Hill) corner kick at 74:26.

The Eagles led in shots, 14-10, and had five corner kicks to three for the Pride. UMW sophomore goalkeeper Blake Weiss (Midland, Va., Liberty) had one save, while Greensboro's Woody Wilder made six stops.

Mary Washington will host Bridgewater College on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the UMW Soccer Classic.
