The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team nearly pulled off an upset of 11th ranked Messiah College, taking a lead into the final minute, but fell to the Falcons, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 6-1-1 while Messiah improves to 7-1.

After a scoreless first half, UMW junior Will Gallop (Charlottesville, Va., Charlottesville) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 69:26 with a perfectly placed shot from outside the penalty box. UMW sustained the Messiah attack until 89:32, when Nick Thompson scored off a deflected shot, and sending the game into overtime.

The Falcons gained the win as Kent Ramirez scored at 96:34 unassisted with the capper.

Messiah outshot UMW, 17-9, and had six corner kicks to two for the Eagles. UMW sophomore Alec Constantine (McLean, Va., Langley) had six saves for the Eagles, while Messiah's Jake Berry had three stops.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit North Carolina Wesleyan College at 4:00 p.m.
