UMW Men's Soccer Tops Wesley, 2-1, in CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team scored two first half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory over Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Battleground. With the win, UMW improves to 7-3 on the season, including a 3-0 mark in conference play.

The Eagles carried all of the momentum in the first half, with Ryan Taibl (Centreville, Va., Westfield) opening the scoring at 15:27 unassisted. Matt Lamb blasted a shot on goal that was saved by Wesley goalkeeper Nick Talerico, but the carom went right to Taibl, who scored from the 18 yard line. The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 when sophomore John Tarley (Williamsburg, Va., Jamestown), who had just entered the game, weaved through traffic and boomed a shot from outside the penalty box that found the nets at 34:10. UMW outshot Wesley, 11-0, in the first half.

The second half saw Wesley's Kyle Long score at 50:51 on a pass from Luis Rivera to cut the deficit to 2-1, but neither team would find the nets in the final 29 minutes.

Mary Washington outshot Wesley, 18-4, and had six corner kicks to none for the Wolverines. UMW senior Emmett Rutkowski (Culpeper, Va., Culpeper) had two saves, while Talerico had nine saves for Wesley.

The Eagles will visit Stevenson University on Wednesday in another CAC contest starting at 4:00 p.m.
