UMW Men's Soccer Tops St. Mary's in CAC Opener, 1-0

Junior Jae Park (Herndon, Va., Herndon) scored the game's lone goal at 12:10 off a pass from sophomore Will Gallop (Charlottesville, Va., Charlottesville) to lead the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's College in the Eagles' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday at the Battleground. UMW, winners of five straight, improve to 5-2 on the year.

The Eagles held a 5-4 edge in shots in the opening half, with the lone score coming on a through pass from Gallop to Park. The Eagles held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second frame.

The Eagles outshot the Seahawks, 14-8, and each team had six corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Emmett Rutkowski (Culpeper, Va., Culpeper) had two saves for Mary Washington, while Paul Spranklin had four saves for the Seahawks.

Mary Washington will visit Catholic University in a nonconference game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
