Sims, Taibl Lead Men's Soccer Past McDaniel

Junior forward Corey Sims scored one goal and added two assists, and senior midfielder Ryan Taibl provided the game winner as the University of Mary Washington men's soccer team defeated McDaniel College, 3-2, in overtime on Sunday in the final game of the UMW Soccer Classic at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring at 11:09, as Sims scored on a pass from senior midfielder Matt Lawrey. Lawrey provided an insurance goal at 46:57 on a feed from Sims, lifting the Eagle lead to 2-0. But McDaniel scored a pair of goals on penalty kicks, by david Cross at 60:42 and by Marrio Davis at 81:50, to tie the score at two.

In overtime, Taibl took a slide across the top of the penalty box from Sims, and boomed a shot into the upper left corner of goal for the game winning tally. The goal was his first of the season, and first since missing all of last season with injury after leading the team in scoring in 2007.

The Eagles outshot McDaniel, 15-4, and each team had four corner kicks. UMW goalkeeper Emmett Rutkowski had one save for the Eagles, while McDaniel's Robert Hollasch made three saves.

Mary Washington will host Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. with live stats available at www.umweagles.com.
