Men's Rugby Roars Through 7-0 Day at Two Venues

Men's Rugby Roars Through 7-0 Day at Two Venues

Hard to top a day where our 15's and 7's sides went 7-0 and barely gave up any points.

Here in Fredericksburg we played 2 mini fifteens games against CNU and Longwood and the team ran wild - Ben Mace, Cameron Giwa, Oli Turner-Blake, Aidan Gallagher, Jose Reyes, and Joseph Ritter played lights out. This was a great run out for the forwards in particular, and all of them did well. Thank you to coach Terry Whalen for keeping the team moving forward.

In Buena Vista VA our 12 players on 7's duty ran the table, going 5-0 with 172 points scored and only 20 points conceded.

The day started with UMW beating Virginia Military Institute 31-5. Next was JMU who fell to the Mother's 51-0. Finally, UMW played a challenging UNCW who they pushed past 39-10.

In the first playoff UMW beat VA Tech 36-0 where everyone played well - Sebastian Schefferman and Conn Foster really played well in and out of the 5-meter channel and the defense was intense.

In the final against Mount St Mary's, UMW controlled the pace of play and save an errant lineout throw was looking for a shutout. Conn Foster scored a great 70 meter try at a pivotal moment. Kit Waddington at scrumhalf and Jamie Cooper at flyhalf managed the game well and UMW won 17-5 (despite Jackson Elder, who did play excellent defense, deciding to swan dive without the ball into the open try zone).

Congrats to the entire team for excellent play all day Conn Foster Tobey Barnfield-Lee Lloyd Stephens Rory Naylor Lewis Naylor Seamus Brennan Adam Warner Adam Deacon and Sebastian Schefermann were all outstanding. Hats off to coaches Brian Wobensmith and Hennie van Zyl.

Many thanks to Scott Zavrel and the Chesapeake Conference for a great format and great tournament.
