Men's Rugby Stops Mount St. Mary's, 42-13, on Homecoming Saturday

Men's Rugby Stops Mount St. Mary's, 42-13, on Homecoming Saturday

Mother's Rugby took the field today needing a win over an excellent Mount St Mary's side that was in first place in the league.

UMW continued to play excellent defense as they have all season and held the Mount to just 3 points til late in the game. Defense is hard work and UMW's fitness showed. Even after they lost both starting props, Ben Mace and Cameron Giwa, their replacements held the line.

Bill Tamani started the scoring for UMW with a well-worked try - it often takes 3-4 defenders to contain him or even tackle him. Senior Seamus Brennan at center scored next with a powerful burst through the defense. Next was flanker Lloyd Stephens, who broke Mount's line and touched down under the posts. All 3 try's were converted by freshman Jamie Cooper

Halftime UMW 21, MSM 3

The second half started with one of the best try's ever seen on our field, Jamie Cooper touching down under the posts after multiple players contributing. Next was a burst from flanker Tobey Barnfield-Lee who is getting even better each week and must just be a terror to play against. Tobey handed the ball to center Rory Naylor who scored. Cooper converted. At this point it was 35-3 to UMW.

Mount, to their credit, scored two late unconverted try's to make it 35-13. UMW was not done though and scrumhalf Kit Waddington scored a nice try and his roommate Cooper converted.

Final UMW 42, MSM 13

Many thanks to the alums that came on Homecoming - we missed you last year. This was senior day as well, but they are not done yet so we will recognize them at a later date!

Thanks as always to the managers and parents - especially Kyree Ford and Brianna Cornett.

UMW moves to 5-0 and travels to Charlotte NC next weekend to take on 5-0 Queens. See you at the field!"
