Balanced Attack and Defense Lead UMW Men's Lax to 16-7 Victory at Marymount

Eleven different players scored goals, and the defensive unit held the opponent to single digits for the second straight game, as the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Marymount University, 16-7, on Saturday in Arlington, Va. The Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season.

Freshman James Milligan opened the scoring with the first of his team-high three goals with 11:53 on the clock. After a Saints goal, UMW answered with the next four scores, including from Keller Dillman at 7:33, Nathan Turney at 5:12, and Henry Moag at 3:32 of the first, and from Balin Galbraith at 12:08 of the second. 

After Marymount trimmed the score to 5-2, Dave Votapek scored on the ensuing faceoff, and Milligan added another with 9:21 to go before intermission. Marymount added a pair to draw to within 7-4 at halftime.

Marymount opened the third quarter scoring, but UMW responded with scores from Votapek at 6:59, Logan Cardwell at 6:19, and Moag at 2:39 to take a 10-5 lead to the fourth quarter. The Eagles raced to five goals in the opening 6:14 of the fourth. Galbraith, Jackson Popeck, and Reece Stonenetted goals, before Ethan Castleman and Milligan cocluded the run to put the matter to rest. AFter Marymount scored a pair, frshman Ben Iannantuono netted a man-down goal to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 47-42, and controlled the ground balls, 39-26. Wyatt Martin made 10 saves in 49 minutes, and Riley Green stopped six shots in 11 minutes between the pipes for the Eagles.

UMW will return to action on March 30, at Stockton University at noon.
