UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls at Catholic, 10-8, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 decision at Catholic University on Wednesday evening in Washington, D.C. The Eagles slip to 4-4 on the season.

The Eagles jumped ahead with strong play in the first two quarters. Jacob Fowler quickly put the Eagles ahead in the opening seconds after winning a faceoff and scoring in transition. After Catholic answered with a pair of goals, UMW responded with two of its own, with Jackson Rhodes and Ethan Castleman finding the back of the cage. Catholic knotted the score, but the Eagles jumped back ahead with a pair of goals from Logan Cardwell, and led, 5-3, after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Catholic opened the scoring, but the Eagles responded with goals from Castleman at 9:25, and Cardwell at 2:28, to close the half with a 7-4 lead.

Dave Votapek got the Eagles on the board to start the third quarter, but Catholic began to fight back, with a pair of goals to finish the frame, and pull to within 8-6 with one quarter to play. In the final frame, the Cardinals outscored the Eagles, 4-0, for the two-score victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 49-33, as well as ground balls, 47-39. UMW goalkeeper Wyatt Martin had seven saves on the night. Fowler won 10-18 face offs, witht eight ground balls.

UMW will return to action on Saturday, when the Eagles host Susquehanna University at noon.
