UMW Men's Lax Tops Bridgewater, 14-10, Behind Cardwell's Big Day

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team pulled away from host Bridgewater College, 14-10, on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater, evening UMW's season record to 2-2.

UMW jumped ahead quickly, netting wearly scores from Logan Cardwell and Dave Votapek in the opening minutes. Bridgewater reached the scoreboard to draw to within 2-1, Cardwell netted his second of the game at 12:26 left. After a BC score, Ethan Castleman and Cardwell scored a pair in a 29 second span. The hosts scored once to end the first and two more to start the second and tie the score at 5-5, but UMW used late goals from Henry Moag and James Milligan to pull ahead, 7-5, by halftime.

Moag started the third quarter with a tally, but Bridgewater answered with three straight to tie the score at eight. UMW settled back in, scoring the last four of the third quarter, with Jackson Popeck, Reece Stone, Cardwell, and Popeck again in the run. Jackson Rhodes gave UMW a 13-8 advantage early in the fourth, before Bridgewater netted a pair to draw to within 13-10. Cardwell capped the scoring with 1:00 left.

Cardwell led the Eagles with five goals and one assist, while Popeck and Moag each scored twice. Keegan Shipe had five ground balls and three caused turnovers on the day, while goalkeeper Wyatt Martin made five saves.

UMW led in shots, 54-27, as well as ground balls, 46-39. UMW forced 27 turnovers.

The Eagles will be back in action on February 28 when they host Eastern University at 4:00 p.m.
