UMW Men's Lax Falls to Roanoke, 10-9, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-9 decision to visiting Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-2 on the season.

UMW fought from behind from the start. After the Maroons scored the first two goals of the day, UMW tied the score with a pair of tallies from senior Ethan Castleman, with 7:25 and 6:28 left in the first. After a Roanoke score to end the first and another to open the second, UMW drew to within 4-3 on a man up goal from Dave Votapek, on a Henry Moag assist. The Maroons captured the next goal, but the Eagles used tallies from Jackson Popeck at 1:05 and Votapek at two seconds left to draw even before halftime, and gain some momentum.

The third quarter was a heavyweight fight, with the teams trading scores throughout. Logan Cardwell scored for the Eagles after UMW had fallen behind to open the frame, and, after another RC score, Jacob Fowler won a faceoff and scored himself in transition. Roanoke went up 8-7, but goals from Popeck at 5:22 and 44 seconds gave UMW the lead for the first time entering the fourth.

Fortunes turned on UMW in the fourth, with four straight shots that hit either the post or cross bar. Roanoke tied the score with 8:22 left, and gained the eventual game winner with 2:46 left.

Popeck had three goals to lead UMW, while Votapek added two goals and an assist, and Castleman added two markers.

UMW led in shots, 54-35, and ground balls, 35-30. UMW goalkeeper Wyatt Martin made 15 saves in a standout performance. Junior Keegan Shipe had eight ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on February 24 at Bridgewater College at 1:00 p.m.
