Moag, Votapek Lead UMW Men's Lax Past Shenandoah, 13-8

Junior Henry Moag scored four goals and added an assist, and sophomore Dave Votapek added a goal and five assists to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory over Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-1 on the young season.

The visiting Hornets jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the first three minutes, but the Eagles answered, netting three straight. Moag scored on a Votapek assist with 11:12 left, and senior Sterling Colgan tied the score unassisted with 7:07 remaining. Sophomore Ryan Adams scored on a Votapek assist with 3:02 on the clock, before the Hornets knotted the score before the end of the quarter.

In the second, the defenses tightened, as each team found just one score, of the man-up variety. Votapek scored on a Logan Cardwell pass with 5:18 left, and the score went to halftime tied at 4-4.

The Eagles roared ahead to start the third, as Moag scored three times in the opening 2:08, with one coming from Votapek. Cardwell and Reece Stone followed with scores, upping the Eagle advantage to 9-4 with 8:56 left in the quarter. After SU scored a pair, Cardwell added another before another Hornet score, and the Eagles led, 10-7, entering the fourth.

UMW scored two early in the fourth, from Jackson Rhodes and Colgan, and another late from Moag, to put the game away.

The Eagles led in shots, 53-27, and ground balls, 35-25. Goalkeeper Wyatt Martin made 10 saves in 57 minutes, and Ryan D'Angelo added a pair in three minutes. Bryce Ridge had five ground balls.

UMW wil return to action on Saturday, when the Eagles host Roanoke College at noon.
