UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls to St. Mary's, 14-10, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 decision to St. Mary's College of MD on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the home finale. The Eagles slip to 8-7 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring with a tally from Michael Seraphin-Jones at 12:58, before SMC knotted the score just over three minutes later. UMW regained the lead with 6:13 remaining on a Logan Green tally to cap the first quarter scoring, and opened the lead up to 3-1 with a Hunter Tipton score on a Kristophe Newman assist with 13:27 left in the second.

After three St. Mary's goals gave them a 4-3 advantage, the Eagles responded with a pair of goals, from Green and Newman, to regain the lead at 5-4. The Seahawks scored in the waning seconds of the second to tie the score just before halftime.

The entertaining contest continued in the third quarter. After the Seahawks scored a pair of goals, UMW answered with a pair of its own, with Newman and Ethan Castleman connecting to once again knot the score at 7-7 with 8:33 remaining in the period. St. Mary's scored the next two goals, but Newman stopped the run with a tally to draw UMW to within 9-8 with 4:35 left.

St. Mary's scored again, but the Eagles drew to within 10-9 with a score from Garrett Keogh on a Green pass in the final seconds in an extra-man chance.

The teams traded scores to open the fourth quarter, with Cameron Walker scoring on a Grant Cragg assist with 9:35 on the clock. SMC scored the final three goals for the 14-10 victory.

St. Mary's led in shots, 40-35, as well as ground balls, 34-27. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made 10 saves on the day. Newman had three goals and an assist, and Logan Green added two goals and an assist for UMW.

The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, when they visit Christopher Newport University at 1:00 p.m.
