UMW Men's Lax Tops Southern Va., 20-11, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia University, 20-11, on Wednesday in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 8-6 on the season.

The Eagles scored first, as Michael Seraphin-Jones opened the proceedings at 13:57. After a Knights goal, UMW scored four straight, including two from J.D. Nozemack and solo goals from Hunter Tipton and Ethan Castleman. Southern Virginia scored a pair before Seraphin-Jones stopped the run, and, after another SVU score, Garrett Keogh scored in the final seconds to give UMW a 7-4 lead after one quarter.

The teams traded momentum and scores in the second, as the Eagles netted the first two, with cappers coming from Keogh and Grant Cragg. SVU followed with three straight before Cameron Walkr capped the scoring for the second, giving the Eagles a 10-7 lead.

UMW ran away with the contest in the third, outscoring the hosts, 7-0. Keogh opened the scoring, before a pair of goals from Kristophe Newman. Seraphin-jones scored his third of the day at 7:06, before goals from Owen and Ethan Castleman preceded another Keogh netter.

The Eagles upped their advantage to 20-8 in the fourth with tallies from Walker, Sterling Colgan and Jackson Popeck before the Knights scored three to cap the scoring.

UMW led in shots, 55-38, as well as gorund balls, 46-31. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made six saves in 48 minutes, and Noah Smith and Nicholas Balducci combined for three in relief.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against St. Mary's College at home for senior day.
