UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 16-10, on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team used a late surge to race past Shenandoah University, 16-10, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-2 on the season.

UMW jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, thanks to scores from senior J.D. Nozemack and junior Cameron Walker. After the Hornets cut their margin in half, senior Kevin Cruz scored on a Nozemack assist as the final seconds counted in the first, giving UMW a 3-1 lead after 15 minutes.

In the second, Logan Green gave the Eagles a 4-1 advantage on a Hunter Tipton assist, before Shenandoah raced back with three straight scores to knot the score at 4-4. The teams then traded scores, with Jackson Davis scoring for the Eagles, before UMW tallied the last two goals of the second, with goals from Kristophe Newman and Green.

Shenandoah opened the third quarter with a pair of goals, before UMW rallied with three to take a 10-7 lead. Ethan Castleman scored a pair of goals in the run, with Walker adding one. After the Hornets cut the score to 10-8, Cruz scored his second of the day with 21 seconds left.

Garrett Keogh opened the fourth quarter with a tally that gave the Eagles a 12-8 advantage, and after SU scored a pair to draw to within two, UMW scored the final four goals of the day, with two apiece from Green and Newman.

Green had four goals and two assists to lead the Eagles, while Newman added three goals. UMW goalkeeper Riley Green made 10 saves between the pipes for the Eagles.

The Eagles led in shots, 45-34. UMW will be back in action next Saturday, when the Eagles visit Haverford College at 12:00 p.m.
