UMW Men's Lax Erupts for Seven Fourth Quarter Goals in 12-9 Win Over Widener

The University of Mary Washingotn men's lacrosse team erupted for seven fourth quarter goals to upend Widener University, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles, who got four goals from Mike Marson and three from Miles Davis, improve to 2-3 on the year.

Davis opened the scoring in the game, scoring on a Vince Smiroldo feed with 7:59 left in the first. Widerener answered with 6:31 left, and the game remained tied at one at the final whistle of the frame.

In the second, the Pride scored twice in the opening minutes, but the Eagles came back to tie with goals from Marson with 7:55 remaining, and Conor Healy with 6:40, on a Davis assist. Widener took the lead into halftime after scoring with 1:16 left in the half.

The Eagles quickly tied the score on a Robert Tata goal with 14:37 left in the third, and rgained the lead on a Jack Carver goal at 10:11. Widener responded with a 3-0 run, with the third tally coming with 8:53 remaining in regulation.

UMW answered with four goals in the next 3:01 to take a 9-7 lead. Drew Carlson scored with 8:44 left, and was followed at 7:59 by Marson. Davis put the Eagles on top at 6:51, and added another with 5:43 to go.

Widener cut the deficit to one with 5:09 remaining, but UMW scored three of the final four goals to gain the W. Chris White scored on a Marson assist at 3:17, and Marson scored unassisted at 2:19. After a Pride score, Marson capped the scoring with 19 seconds left.

Mary Washington led in shots, 45-29, and won 13 of 25 faceoffs. UMW led in ground balls, 55-42, and forced nine failed clears. Sam Wasson stopped 15 shots in goal for UMW. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Washington & Lee University at 7 p.m.
