UMW Men's Lacrosse Falls in Nailbiter at Widener, 11-10

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped an 11-10 score at Widener University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles drop to 2-3 on the season.

The game remained tight throughout. Widener opened the scoring with 12:54 remaining, but the Eagles would strike twice to take the lead. Miles Davis scored with 11:09 left to tie the score, and again with 4:41 to go to give UMW its first lead. Widener tied the score at 2-2 in the final minute of the quarter, and the score stood knotted after the first.

In the second, Eagle freshman Noah Dewey gave the visitors the lead once again with 13:24 left on an assist from Jack Carver. Widener would tie the score three minutes later, but Dewey scored again with eight minutes left before halftime. Widener agains cored in the final minute to tie the score heading to halftime.

The third quarter started with the hosts scoring two straight to take the largest lead either team enjoyed during the day at 6-4. Shane McKenzie and Davis scored as UMW would tally two of the final three goals of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 7-6 entering the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Widener opened the scoring, but UMW answered with two straight to tie the game. Carver scored on an Owen Dingman assist with 11:09 left, and Davis scored unassisted with 8:25 remaining.

After a Widener score, Dingman scored to tie the game at nine with 5:37 left, and after another Widener goal, Davis scored unassisted with 3:06 on the clock. Widener would find the game winner with just 47 seconds left on a goal from Tim Taylor.

The Eagles led in shots, 47-31, while Widener held a 30-28 ground ball advantage and a 14-10 lead in faceoffs. Sam Wasson had 12 saves in goal for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Washington & Lee University at 7:00 p.m. on the campus rec turf field for a game under the lights.
