UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops Wesley, 17-7, in CAC Saturday Action

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team overcame a sluggish start to defeat Wesley College, 17-7, on Saturday in Dover, Del. The Eagles improve to 5-5 on the season.

Wesley started strong, leading 3-0 after one quarter, and 4-0, with 9:15 left in the second. The Eagles then erupted for five second quarter goals, started by Jared Krikorian on a Mike Marson assist with 8:44 left.

Wesley upped its lead to 5-1 18 seconds later, but the Eagles closed the half with four straight scores. Miles Davis scored a man down goal with 5:38 left, and Jack Bodurant scored with 3:42 left on a Davis assist. Teddy Blyskal then scored on a Davis feed with 2:43 remaining, and Blyskal tied the score with a man-up tally from Greg Smith with 1:15 remaining.

After scoring five in the second, UMW scored six in the third and six in the fourth to take control. Chris Garcia scored on a Davis assist with 13:23 left, and Krikorian scored again with 10:59 left to up the Eagle lead to 7-5.

After a Wesley goal, UMW scored the next seven goals. Bondurant scored on a Ben Byrne pass with 6:03 left in the third, and J.D. West scored with 5:44 left on a Smith pass. Bondurant scored on a Krikorian feed with 3:34 remaining, and Krikorian capped the quarter with another goal, this time assisted by Smith.

Smith opened the fourth quarter by extending the lead to 12-6 with 14:19 left, and Conor Healy followed with 13:24 remaining. Owen Dingman scored a man-up tally with 11:30 left from Smith.

Wesley interrupted the run with a goal with 9:31 to play to cut the score to 14-7, but the Eagles answered with scores from Smith with 6:23 left, Dingman with 4:31 left, and Marson with 3:23 to go. 

Smith had two goals and six assists for the Eagles, while Krikorian and Bondurant each had three goals and an assist. Davis added a goal and three assists.

Wesley led in shots, 39-32, while the Eagles led in ground balls, 46-33. UMW led in faceoffs won, 19-8, and went 2-2 on the extra man offense. Colin Bressan had 10 saves in goal for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will host St. Mary's College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. on the campus rec field as part of the Spring Jubilee. A cookout will precede the game, starting at 5:30 p.m.
