#17 UMW Men's lacrosse Falls to St. Mary's, 9-8, in Overtime on Wednesday

The 17th ranked University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team overcame an 8-5 fourth quarter deficit, but fell in overtime to St. Mary's College of Md., 9-8, in overtime on Wednesday at the Battleground. UMW slips to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

St. Mary's sprinted out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter, with an Eagles score by John Bohlinger sandwiched among four Seahawk tallies. Each team scored once in the second, with Chip pittard hitting the nets for UMW, and St. Mary's held a 5-2 advantage at halftime.

The deficit remained intact through the third, as each team scored three times. Junior Billy Kelly scored twice for the Eagles in the frame, and junior Luke Dick added another to bring the score to 8-5 entering the fourth quarter.

The UMW offense erupted for three unanswered goals in the fourth, as Bohlinger scored a man-up tally with 11:45 left, and Joey Marson scored unassisted with 10:29 to play. Kelly found the tying score with 3:58 remaining on a Pittard assist, and the defense clamped down to send the game to overtime.

The Seahawks scored the game winner with 41 seconds left in the overtime period on a goal by Gordy Long.

Kelly led the Eagles with three goals and an assist, while Bohlinger had two goals. Dick and Pittard each had a goal and an assist.

Junior Zack Del Grosso had 14 saves for the Eagles, while Dick had a team-high five ground balls.

UMW will return to action on Saturday with another key CAC contest at home against York College of Pa. starting at 1:00 p.m.
