The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-2 lead en route to a 10-7 victory over visiting Hampden-Sydney College in the first-ever game played on the new UMW turf field at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-0, while the Tigers fall to 0-1.

UMW jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, as junior Sean Dacey scored unassisted at 12:29 remaining, and Luke Dick followed on a pass from Greg Smith with 8:22 left. The Tigers scored twice, i8ncluding on a man-up opportunity, to tie the score after the first quarter.

The Eagles took the lead for good on a flurry of three goals in 1:07 late in the second. Paul Tunick scored with 3:50 left, and John Tobin scored 13 seconds later with the long stick to up the lead to 4-2. Senior Harry Snyder added another goal with 2:43 to play, and Dacey capped the first half scoring on a Tunick assist with 13 seconds remaining.

The Eagles scored the lone third quarter goal on a Pete McDermott man up tally with 5:48 on the clock. The Tigers scored five fourth-quarter goals, but Tunick, Dick, and Dacey each provded goals that would be the difference.

Hampden-Sydney held a 30-29 edge in shots, while the Eagles had a 40-35 ground ball edge. Senior goalie Matt Prin had another standout effort in goal, making 19 saves while allowing seven Tiger scores in 60 minutes.

Mary Washington will visit McDaniel College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
