UMW Men's Lacrosse Tops York, 17-5, for Third Seed in CAC Playoffs

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team used a 9-0 first quarter effort in defeating York College, 17-5, on Thursday at the Battleground in the final regular season game of the year. The Eagles improve to 10-5 on the season, just one win shy of the school record for season wins.

The Eagles were dominant in the first quarter, scoring on nine of their 10 shots while holding the Spartans scoreless. Senior midfielder Evan Weiss scored three of his team-high four goals in the quarter, while freshman John Bohlinger and sophomore Sean Dacey added two goals apiece in the frame.

The Eagles were whistled for five second quarter penalties to stem the tide offensively, but UMW was able to keep the Spartans at bay during a three-minute illegal stick penalty. The Eagles held a 12-3 advantage at halftime.

The Eagles scored five straight goals through the third quarter and into the fourth to run the score to 17-3, before the Spartans netted a pair of late goals to bring the final margin to 17-5.

UMW led in shots, 35-27, and in ground balls, 21-14. In addition to Weiss' four goals, Dacey had three goals and an assist and Mark Bowler and Bohlinger both had three goals for UMW. Ryan Kleman had eight saves for the Eagles in three quarters before giving way to Ryan Montgomery, who didn't record a save in the fourth.

Mary Washington will host Hood College in the first round of the CAC Tournament on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
