UMW Men's Lacrosse Edges St. Mary's, 8-7

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team overcame a 5-1 second quarter deficit to defeat St. Mary's College, 8-7, on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in CAC play.

The Seahawks held a 2-1 lead after one quarter, outshooting UMW 11-3. The Seahawks upped the lead to 5-1 with a pair of extra-man goals, with less than four minutes remaining in the half. But UMW responded with three late goals, by Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary), Evan Weiss (Oakton, Va., Madison), and Luke Dick (Annapolis, MD, Archbishop Spaulding HS), to cut the halftime margin to 5-4.

The second half saw the Eagles net the first three goals of the period, from Dick, Sean Dacey (Round Hill, Va., Loudoun Valley), and Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee), to take a 7-5 advantage. The six-goal run was ended as the Seahawks scored just before the end of the quarter.

In the fourth, Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield) scored in the opening seconds, and after a St. Mary's goal with 12 minutes remaining, both defenses stiffened and neither team would score the rest of the way.

Meyer and Dick led UMW with two goals apiece, while Chris Becraft and JP Lennon had two each for St. Mary's.

St. Mary's led in shots, 34-30, and the Eagles held a 26-23 edge in ground balls. Ryan Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) had 14 saves in goal for Mary Washington, who will visit Salisbury University next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
