UMW Men's Lax Tops Wooster, 14-4

 

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team broke open a close game in the second quarter with five goals in a 14-4 win over the visiting College of Wooster on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles, winners of two straight, improve to 4-3 on the year.

Sophomore Paul Tunick (Annandale, Va., Woodson) put the Eagles on the scoreboard first, connecting off a pass from Luke Dick (Annapolis, MD, Archbishop Spaulding HS) at 13:54 of the first quarter. Both defenses held for the rest of the quarter, but the scoring pace amplified in the second, as the two teams traded two goals apiece to start the frame. But the Eagles scored twice in the last 1:08, with scores from Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) and Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield), to take a 6-2 lead to halftime.

The Eagles upped their lead to 10-4 throught three quarters, as Sean Dacey (Round Hill, Va., Loudoun Valley) scored a pair of goals and Dick and Johnny Esposito (Centreville, VA, Westfield) added single tallies in the quarter. The Eagles put the game away by outscoring the fighting Scots, 4-0, in the fourth quarter.

Snyder led UMW with three goals and one assist, while Dacey added three goals, and Evan Weiss added one goal and four assists. 

UMW held a 41-17 advantage in shots, picking up 30 ground balls to 21 for the guests. Ryan Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) had 11 saves in the Eagle net, while Ryan Kleman (Fairfax, VA, Robinson) added two.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Goucher College at 4:00 p.m.
