UMW Men's Lax Falls at CNU, 9-8

The Christopher Newport University men's lacrosse team scored five goals in a pivotal second quarter in downing visiting Mary Washington, 9-8, on Sunday in rainy Newport News, Va. The Eagles fall to 2-3 while the Captains improve to 3-0.

With the score tied at two after one quarter, CNU scored five of the game's next six goals, with only UMW's Sean Dacey (Round Hill, Va., Loudoun Valley) advancing the Eagles' score. The Captains led, 7-4, at halftime as Luke Dick (Annapolis, MD, Archbishop Spaulding HS) found the nets for the Eagles just before halftime.

The Eagles were able to draw within one at 7-6 in the third quarter, blanking the hosts while Dacey and Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) scored. The two teams traded goals in the fourth, with CNU finishing with a one-point win.

Dacey had three goals, Evan Weiss (Oakton, Va., Madison) two, and Dick provided a goal and three assists to lead UMW, who was edged in shots, 32-31. The Eagles led in ground balls, 16-14, while senior Ryan Kleman (Fairfax, VA, Robinson) had one save, and junior Ryan Montgomery (Chapel Hill, N.C., Chapel Hill) provided eight saves in the UMW goal.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they host Eastern University at 3:30 p.m.
