Junior middie Kohl Meyer (Shawnee, N.J., Shawnee) scored four goals and junior Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) added three goals and two assists to pace the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 14-12 victory over Wesley College on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in CAC play, while the Wolverines fall to 2-10 and 1-5.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead, netting the first five goals of the game on their first five shots in only 5:13 into the game. Meyer scored his first tally two and a half minutes into the game. Senior Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy) scored with 10:42 remaining, and Bowler added his first score 18 seconds later.With 9:47 remaining, Meyer scored his second goal, and defender Dave Watts (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) upped the lead to 5-0 19 seconds later.

Wesley responded with the next three goals of the game extending into the second quarter, but UMW rallied to stem the tide on another Meyer goal with nine minutes remaining. The Wolverines cut the deficit to 6-5 with a pair of goals at 4:03 left in the half, but UMW got late goals from Bowler at 1:37 to play and from Meyer just before the halftime horn to lead, 8-5, at intermission.

The Eagles scored the first three goals of the second half (from Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield), Evan Weiss (Oakton, Va., Madison), and Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Cold Spring Harbor)) to lead, 11-5, with 11:25 remaining in the third quarter. After a pair of Wesley goals cut the deficit to 11-7, Meyer and Bowler each scored to hand UMW a 13-7 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wolverines scored five times in the final quarter, including twice in the final minute, but the Eagles were able to hold on for the two-goal win.

The Eagles led in shots, 48-37, and had 46 ground balls to 32 for Wesley. The Eagles won 18 of 29 faceoffs. Wesley was successful on three of four extra man opportunities.

Sophomore Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) made five saves for the Eagles while a trio of Wesley goalies made 13 stops.

Mary Washington will visit St. Mary's College in a key CAC game on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
