UMW Men's Lax Falls to Goucher, 9-7

The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 9-7 decision to Goucher Gollege on Saturday at the Battleground to snap its four-game win streak and fall to 4-4 on the season. The Gophers improve to 5-2 overall.

The Eagles got on the scoreboard first, as senior Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Cold Spring Harbor) scored on a Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy) assist with 10:51 remaining in the first quarter. Goucher scored three straight, only to see UMW tally twice on goals by Meaney and Johnny Hink (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) to tie the score at three at the end of one quarter.

After the gophers regained the lead, UMW scored twice on goals by Deal and Paul Tunick (Annandale, Va., Woodson) to take a 5-4 lead with 10:14 left in the second. But Goucher scored three of the final four goals of the half to lead, 7-6, at intermission.

The defenses tightened in the third, as Goucher scored the quarter's only goal to lead by two entering the fourth. After Goucher added an insurance tally, Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) capped the scoring at 4:49 for UMW.

The Eagles led in shots, 31-29, and Goucher led in ground balls, 31-26. Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) had 11 saves for the Eagles while Chris Stricklin had 15 stops for Goucher.

Mary Washington will host Stevenson University on Wednesday in Capital Athletic Conference action.
