UMW Men's Lax Tops CNU, 12-7

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Junior Mark Bowler (Cary, N.C., Cary) scored four goals and added one assist to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 12-7 victory over visiting Christopher Newport University on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 1-3 overall, while the Captains fall to 2-2.

The Eagles led, 3-0, after one period, thanks to a pair of scores from junior Brian Meaney (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., Cold Spring Harbor) and one by freshman Johnny Hink (Fairfax, Va., Woodson). Hink added another score with 12:52 left in the second quarter to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead. After a man-up goal by the Captains, UMW reeled off the next four scores of the game to lead, 8-1. Bowler, Brian Deal (Pittsburgh, Pa., Shady Side Academy), Evan Weiss (Oakton, Va., Madison), and Harry Snyder (Charlottesville, Va., St. Anne's-Belfield) scored on the run for UMW. 

Christopher Newport scored three of the next five goals to cut the deficit to 9-4, but the Eagles used goals from Meaney and Bowler to regain a seven-goal advantage at 11-4 with 8:53 to play. The Captains scored three of the final four goals of the game, including two on man-up opportunities, to trim the final to 12-7.

In addition to Bowler's five points, Meaney scored three times, and Hink added two goals and an assist for UMW, who outshot the Captains, 32-21, and had 37 ground balls to 32 for CNU. Sophomore Matt Prin (Olney, Md., Sherwood) had seven saves for the Eagles, while Andy McGregor had six stops for CNU.

The Eagles will visit McDaniel College on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
