UMW Men's Lax Drops Opener at Va. Wesleyan, 6-5


VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 6-5 decision at Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday in its 2010 season opener. Five different players scored for UMW, who lost despite posting a 35-28 advantage in shots.

The Eagles fell behind early, trailing 1-0 after the first quarter and 3-1 at halftime. UMW trailed, 5-4 after three quarters, and each team scored once in the final frame for a one-goal defeat for Coach Kurt Glaeser's squad.

Mary Washington saw Dan Coats post two assists and Kohl Meyer add a goal and an assist. Harry Snyder, Brian Meaney, Evan Weiss, and Brian Deal each scored once. Virginia Wesleyan was led by Damian Becker's three goals.

UMW sophomore Matt Prin made 10 saves for the Eagles, while Virginia Wesleyan stopped 15 Eagle shots. The Eagles went 2-9 on extra man opportunities, while the Marlins went 3-8.

The Eagles will host Hampden-Sydney College next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
