Balanced Attack Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past EMU, 78-49

Guards Dorian Davis and Zack Blue each scored 18 points, and forward Daniel Peterson added 13, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite University, 78-49, on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 11-7 on the season.

The lead swung back and forth in the early going, but the Eagles gained the lead, before the Royals connected for a pair of three pointers to gain the lead at 14-11 with 10:29 left in the half. The Eagles went on an 8-2 run to regain the lead, and a Davis three pointer extended the lead to 24-19 with 5:30 to go. Blue scored the Eagles' next five points, and the Eagles clamped down defensively, to lead 33-23 at halftime.

EMU opened the half with a run, and trailed 36-32, but UMW then went on a 16-6 run, and extended the lead to 19 on another Davis three with 7:49 to go. A Blue three with 6:11 upped the lead to 20, and the Eagles extended steadily in the final minutes.

Blue made 7-13 shots, connecting on a pair of threes and a pair of free throws en route to 18 points. Davis shot 7-14, making 4-9 three point tries. Peterson hauled in nine rebounds in addition to shooting 6-11 from the floor.

The Eagles shot 50% from the floor (30-60), making 8-24 three point tries and 10-13 free throws. EMU shot 16-47 (34%), making 6-29 threes and 11-16 free throws. The Eagles controlled the boards, leading 40-24 in rebounds.

The Eagles will be back in action on sunday when they host UC Santa Cruz at noon.
