The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 72-56 decision to 24th ranked Johns Hopkins University on Monday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 9-6 on the season.
Both teams' defensive reputations preceded them, and both lived up to the hype. The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead on a basket from freshman Kaden Bates and a three pointer from junior Trey Pittman. Another Pittman score and a three from senior Zack Blue upped UMW's lead to 10-2 with 15:35 left in the first half.
The Blue Jays then went on a 15-1 run to grab a 17-11 advantage with 6:51 remaining. A Daniel Peterson basket stopped the run, and the Eagles battled back to within four on several occasions. The teams traded baskets until a three pointer from sophomore Dorian Davis pulled UMW to within one, 27-26, with 3:11 to go. JHU scored the next six, but the Eagles got the last three on a traditional three point play from Bates, and the Eagles trailed at intermission, 33-29.
In the second, the Blue Jays heated up offensively, extending the lead to seven on several occassions. The Eagles fought back each time, until an 18-3 Blue Jay run put the visitors up, 69-49, with 1:39 remaining. UMW outscored JHU, 7-2, down the stretch for the final result.
Blue led the Eagles with 13 points, and Davis added 10, while Peterson led with seven rebounds.
UMW shot 20-61 from the floor (32.8%), making 6-17 three point chances and 10-18 free throws. Hopkins shot 27-58 (46.6%), making 8-25 three point attempts and 10-17 free throws. The Blue Jays controlled the boards, 49-32.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Wilson College at 7:00 p.m.
