UMW Men's Basketball Edges Marymount, 52-49, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Marymount University, 52-49, on Saturday afternoon in a clash at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 6-2 on the season.

In a game that saw both offenses struggle, the Eagles were paced by sophomore guard Dorian Davis, who scored 11 points, and senior forward Greg Rowson, who netted 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.

The Eagles fell behind, 6-0, in the early going, but tied the score at 8-8 on a jumper from Daniel Peterson. The game remained a one-possession affair until the Saints hit five straight to take a 20-15 lead with 5:44 left. A dunk from Devin Johnson kickstarted a 6-0 Eagle run, and the lead changed hands twice more before a Peterson basket capped the first half with the Eagles holding a 25-22 lead.

Two quick scores to open the second half gave the Eagles a 29-22 advantage, and that margin swelled to 38-30 with 11:09 left, thanks to a Trey Pittman jumper. The Saints chipped away and twice drew to within two before tying the score with 1:54 left (48-48). A basket from Rowson gave the Eagles the lead, and free throws from Rowson and Davis down the stretch capped the final, 52-49.

UMW shot 38.3% from the floor for the game (18-47), making 1-11 three-point attempts and 15-26 free throws. Marymount shot 36.2% on 17-47 shooting, making 7-22 three point tries and 8-14 free throws. The Eagles held a 35-32 edge in rebounding, and win the turnover battle, 13-16.

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday night when they visit Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va. at 7:00 p.m.
