UMW Men's Basketball Fall Short to Yeshiva, 69-64, on Sunday

Senior guard Greg Rowson scored a team-high 14 points for the University of Mary Washington men's basketball when falling short in an exciting game to Yeshiva University, 69-64, on Sunday afternoon in New York City, N.Y. The Eagles fall to 13-5 on the season.

Emmanuel Aghayere was fed early to his first bucket at 19:13 on three-straight put-ups on Mary Washingtons' first possession. The Yeshiva Maccabees' score 3 straight baskets and a free throw to make the score 7-2 for Yeshiva University in the first 2 minutes of the game.  A Macabee 3-pointer raised the Yeshiva lead to 8, but Greg Rowson's layup brings the score to 10-4, which was closely followed by a Cameron McCravy layup at 15:12. A layup in the post by Greg Rowson makes the score 8-13 with 13:37 to go in the 1st. Back-and-forth play over the next 2 minutes would bring the score to 12-20, as Yeshiva continued to hold the lead. The Macs home-field advantage as well as helped early, but the Eagles' Matias Prock scored his first bucket of the game after a rebound off of a shot with 10 minutes to go. Devin Johnson scored a mid-range jumper at 9:00, who is subbing in as a big body in the paint for the currently injured Daniel Peterson. Da'Shawn Cook followed Johnsons' basket with a jumper of his own at 8:14 to bring the Eagles to within 2 points at 18-20.

A UMW timeout at 6:54 helped the Eagles regroup and tie the game up at 20 just 9 seconds out of the break. A breakaway score at 6:14 for Zach Blue helped the Eagles gain the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game, but the Maccabees would not let the Eagles hold the lead for long. On the next possession, Yeshiva hit another 3-pointer to break its 5-minute scoring drought to gain the lead once again to make the score 22-23 Macs. A layup by Da'Shawn Cook at 2:35 makes the Eagles lead 28-24, followed by Dorian Davis and Mary Washingtons' first 3 of the game at 1:27 to bring the score to 33-29. Andrew Rowson followed in Davis' footsteps to hit a 2nd-straight basket from beyond the arc for the Eagles to end the first with a 7-point UMW advantage. With a slow start, Mary Washington found a rhythm and put up points when needed to end on a positive note going into the 2nd half. The Eagles led in rebounds 21-13 in the first half.

The Maccabees hit 2-straight corner 3-pointers one minute into the second half to bring the score within one point to 36-35 Mary Washington. Another bucket by the Macs allowed them to gain a 1-point advantage, which was followed by a response bucket by Emmanuel Aghayere to make the score 38-37. A layup by Zach Blue brings it to 40-37, but a technical foul directly following his bucket leads to 2 free throws by Yeshiva to keep the game close. Yeshivas' Zevi Samet continued his strong play by adding another 3 points to his stat sheet at 14:21, which was followed by a Dorian Davis layup at 14:03, bringing the score to 44-45. Two buckets by the Maccabees bring their lead to 6 at 50-44. A Zach Blue rebound brought up an Andrew Rowson basket at 11:12.

Greg Rowson hit a 3-pointer at 10:32 for the Eagles to within 4 points. A free throw by Da'Shawn Cook brings the score to 50-53. A Yeshiva shot clock violation at 9:23 led to Andrew Rowson hitting 2 free throws to bring the score to 52-56 at 8 minutes to go in the contest. Greg Rowson made a free throw at 5:05 to bring the deficit to 5 points,  with Da'Shawn Cook hitting both free throws to bring the score to within 3 points at 55-58. A 3-pointer by Zevi Samet was followed by a Cameron McCravy bringing the score to a 61-57 Maccabee advantage. 2 blocked threes by Yeshiva on Da'Shawn Cook. The Macs gained a 5-point lead with a pair of free throws making the score 63-58 with just under a minute to go in the game. A layup by Greg Rowson at 45.6 puts the score at 60-63. 2 Yeshiva free-throws and a bucket in the paint brings the score to 67-60 with 22.7 seconds to go. Da'Shawn Cook and Cameron McCravy layups brings the score to 64-67, with 3.2 seconds to go. Tough offensive and defensive efforts throughout the game and by the Eagles were not enough to give them the win, but it was a strong performance by the Eagles overall.

UMW shot 42.2% from the field (27-64), making 3-24 three-point tries, and made 7-21 free throws. Yeshiva shot 44.0% (22-50), making 12-23 three-point shots and 13-15 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds,39-36, in steals, 14-11, and in points-off-turnovers, 15-8. UMW dominated the Maccabees in the paint, outscoring them 46-18.

The Eagles will be back in action at home on Thursday when they host Pfieffer University at 7:00 p.m.
