UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Hood, 65-63, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 65-63 decision to Hood College on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles slip to 11-4 on the season.

The visiting Blazers jumped ahead in the early going, leading 11-3 at 16:58. Six straight points from Mary Washington trimmed the deficit to 11-9, but nine straight from Hood returned the margin to 120-9 with 14:50 remaining. A slam dunk and pair of free throws  from senior Greg Rowson cut UMW's deficit to 21-16, and a Da'Shawn Cook jumper trimmed the score to 21-18 with 9:10 remaining.

Cook connected on a three with 4:07 to go, and a pair of free throws from Matias Prock tied the score at 28 42 seconds later. Cook connected on another late three, and Zack Blue scored another before the final horn, giving the Eagles a 35-30 edge at halftime.

Four early points from senior Emmanuel Aghayere extended the Eagle lead to seven in the early going in the second half, A Blazer three with 13:20 left capped a run to cut UMW's lead to 42-41. After an 8-4 Hood streak, the score stood tied at 46. Thirteen straight Hood points dug the Eagles into a 59-46 deficit with 7:01 left, but 11 straight from Rowson and a layup form Dorian Davis knotted the score again, at 59-59, with 3:37 remaining. 

Davis then connected on a three pointer, and a Rowson free throw gave the Eagles a 1:06 on the clock. A pair of three pointers in the final 33 seconds left the Eagles on the short end of a 65-63 decision.

Rowson led UMW with 23 points on 7-16 shooting from the floor and 7-10 from the free throw line. He also led UMW with 10 rebounds.

UMW shot 36.5% from the floor (19-52), making 8-31 three point tries and 17-27 free throws. Hood shot 39.6% (21-53), making 11-35 three point attempts and 12-17 free throws. The Blazers held a 37-36 edge in rebounds.

The Eagles will be back in action a week from Wednesday when they visit Eastern Mennonite University at 7:00 p.m.
