#24 UMW Men's Basketball Tops Marymount, 71-65, to Improve to 6-1

The 24th ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team topped Marymount University, 71-65, on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Va. The Eagles improve to 6-1 on the season, heading to final exams.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, and a three pointer from senior Cameron McCravy turned the lead to double figures at 18-8 with 12:44 remaining in the first half. The Eagles led, 27-16, with a Greg Rowson dunk with 6:51 remaining, but the Saints then went on a 15-3 run at the end of the half to take a brief 31-30 lead, before a Zack Blue free throw knotted the score before halftime.

In the second, the lead changed hands several times in the early going, before UMW reeled off seven straight with a four-point play from freshman Dorian Davis and a three from senior Da'Shawn Cook, giving UMW a 47-38 lead with 12:23 left. The Saints closed the gap to three, but back-to-back jumpers from Cook kept the lead intact for UMW. Marymount pulled to within two, at 54-52 with 8:09 to play, but five points from McCravy pushed the Eagles back ahead by five, at 60-55 with 5:51 on the clock.

Senior post Emmanuel Aghayere followed with a dunk and layup to give the Eagles momentum back, 64-57, with 4:51 left, and the Eagles would mantain a multiple possession lead from there, connecting on free throws at the end for the 71-65 victory.

Cook led the Eagles with 16 points on 7-12 shooting, four assists, four rebounds, and two steals. Aghayere added 12 points and six rebounds, all on the offensive end. Greg Rowson, Blue, Davis, and McCravy all had nine points in the balanced Eagle attack.

Mary Washington shot 23-48 from the field (47.8%), making 8-22 three point tries and 17-26 free throws. Marymount shot 19-44 (43.2%), making 10-25 three pointers and 17-19 free throws. Rebounds were even at 27 apiece.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday December 14 when they host AVerett University at 6:00 p.m.
