UMW Men's Basketball Falls to Salisbury, 83-73, on Wednesday Night

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped an 83-73 decision to Salisbury University on Wednesday night in Coast to Coast Athletic Conference action. The Eagles slip to 15-7 on the season.

The Sea Gulls started hot from behind the three-point arc, jumping out to a 13-4 lead. A pair of Anias Saunders three pointers cut the Eagle deficit to 16-9 with 15:50 remaining, but Salisbury answered with seven straight to take a 23-9 lead. UMW roared back with nine straight points, with three pointers from Saunders and Riley Welch. Another Saunders three with 10:02 left drew the Eagles to within 25-21.

After a Sea Gull score, Welch hit another three, and UMW closed the gap to 27-24 with 9:27 left. Salisbury responded with seven straight to pull ahead by 10, and held a double digit lead save for a pair of three pointers from Saunders, who kept UMW close. Salisbury remained hot, hitting three three pointers to take a 53-38 lead to halftime.

In the second half, Salisbury jumped out hot again, but a Welch three brought the Eagles back to within 12, at 15:06 left. After another Sea Gull spurt, Patrick Smedley hit a three to pull UMW to within 13, at 62-49. UMW followe dwith a 10-2 run, keyed by six points from Ra'Shawn Cook and a three from Saunders. A pair of Cook free throws drew UMW to within seven, at 79-72, with 43 seconds left, but Salisbury made free throws down the stretch for the 10-point win.

Saunders led UMW with 29 points on 10-23 shooting, while Welch scored 14 and Ra'Shawn Cook 10.

The Eagles shot 42.9% from the field (24-56), making 16-31 three point shots and 9-16 on free throws. Salisbury shot 57.7% (30-52) from the floor, making 10-18 three point attempts and 13-18 free throws.

UMW will close the regular season on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Christopher Newport University.
