UMW Men Fall at Buzzer in OT at Widener, 66-63

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 66-63 decision in overtime on a buzzer beater on Wednesday night in Chester, Pa. The Eagles slip to 12-4 on the season.

The Eagles used a 9-0 run midway through the first half to grab a 15-6 advantage, with sophomore Zack Blue hitting one three pointer, and senior Anias Saunders two. After baksets from seniors Ra'Shawn Cook and Da'Shawn Cook, another three from Saunders extended the Eagle lead to 28-14 with 7:14 remaining. The Pride scored the last four point of the half to cut the halftime deficit to 35-25.

In the second, the Eagles extended its late lead to 57-48 on a Da'Shawn Cook three with 3:13 remaining. Widener responded with the past nine points of regulation, including the tying basket with five second left.

In overtime, baskets from Daniel Peterson and Da'Shawn Cook built a four-point Eagle lead, but Widener responded with a three point play with 3:06 remaining to draw to within 61-59. Widener knotted the score with a pair of free throws with 2:50 to go, but Peterson answered with a driving basket with 2:01 left to give the Eagles a 63-61 advantage. Widener knotted the score with 42 seconds left, and hit a three pointer at the buzzer for the winning basket.

Saunders led UMW with 16 points and eight rebounds, while D. Cook scored 12 points. Peterson scored eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 37.9% (25-66) from the field, making 11-34 three point shots and 2-4 free throws on the night. Widener shot 38.1% (24-63), including 7-24 on three pointers, and made 11-13 free throws.

UMW will be back in action on Monday at Averett University at 6:00 p.m.
