Saunders Leads UMW Men Past Goucher, 77-49, on Wednesday

A nine-day layoff showed little effect on the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team and senior Anias Saunders, as the senior guard scored 29 points and added 13 rebounds in a 77-49 victory over Goucher College on Wednesday in Reading, Pa., at the Albright College Holiday Tournament. The Eagles improve to 11-3 on the season.

UMW steamrolled to a 51-20 halftime lead. The Eagles held a 12-8 advantage five minutes into play, when Saunders and sophomore Zack Blue connected for three pointers to up the advantage to 18-8. After a Gopher basket, UMW reeled off eight straight, with three pointers from senior Riley Welch and freshman Erik Prosise and a bucket from freshman Andrew Rowson

Saunders scored five straight to up the advantage to 31-12 with 9:38 left. Goucher used an 8-2 run to draw to within 13, at 33-20, but the Eagles closed the half on an 18-0 run to take a 31-point lead to the locker room.

In the second half, the lead stayed near 30 for much of the action, as the game was evenly scored in the second 20 minutes. 

Saunders led the Eagles with 29 points on 10-18 shooting, making 5-8 three point shots and 4-5 free throws. He added 13 rebounds and four assists. Blue scored 10 points and added four assists, and Prosise added 10 points off the bench. Daniel Peterson added 11 rebounds for the Eagles.

UMW shot 48.3% from the field, making 29-60 shots, including 13-29 three point shots (44.8%), and 6-11 free throws. Goucher was limited to 32.1% (17-53), making 6-20 three point shots and 8-12 free throws. UMW led in rebounding, 44-29.

The Eagles will play in the tournament championship on Thursday.
