UMW Men's Basketball Roars Back Past Ferrum, 86-55, on Sunday

Overcoming a two-point halftime deficit, the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team outscored Ferrum College, 44-11, in the second half, in taking an 86-55 victory over the Panthers in the final game of the Hampden-Sydney Holiday Classic on Sunday evening. The Eagles improve to 10-3 on the season.

The lead changed hands four times in the early going, before back-to-back three pointers from senior guard Riley Welch and senior guard Ra'Shawn Cook gave the Eagles a 14-7 advantage with 16:04 remaining in the first. The Eagles were able to maintain the lead for the next stretch of the game, until Ferrum tid the score at 20-20 with 12:08 remaining.

UMW led by seven midway through the first half, but consecutive three pointers from Ferrum trimmed the score to 31-30 with 8:50 left. UMW agan pulled away to as many as a seven point lead, but Ferrum closed the half on a run that would give them a 44-42 lead at the break.

The second half was a different story, as UMW started with a 14-2 run and never looked back, outscoring the Panthers, 44-11, over the second half. 

Ra'Shawn Cook led the Eagles with a career-high 29 points, on 11-15 shooting from the field, including 7-10 from three-point range. He added seven rebounds and five assists as well. Welch scored 15 for UMW, going 5-9 from three-point range, and Da'Shawn Cook added 13 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

UMW shot 47.5% from the floor, making 16-35 three-point tries, and 12-16 free throws. Ferrum shot 31.7% (19-60), making 10-38 three point attempts and 7-12 free throws.

The Eagles will enjoy a ten-day break for the holiday, and return to action on December 29 against Goucher College at the Albright College Holiday Classic.
