UMW Men's Basketball Falls at Penn St. Harrisburg, 75-64

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dripped a 75-64 decision at Penn State-Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon in Harrisburg, Pa. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles dug an early hole, falling behind 9-3, and eventually trailing by as many as nine, at 19-10 with 6:20 to play in the first. But UMW raced back, making a 15-6 run to tie the score at 25-25 with 1:31 to play before halftime. The teams exchanged three point plays to end the half, and the score stood tied after 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Lions heated up offensively, shooting 64% from the field (16-25). After an early run by Harrisburg to open the second, UMW battled back, and led by as many as three points, at 43-40, with 13:27 remaining. The hosts then went on an 11-0 run to take a 51-43 lead with 8:57 remaining. Five straight Eagle points brought the game back to a two-possession game, but UMW could pull no closer than eight in the waning minutes.

The Eagles were led by senior Ra'Shawn Cook, who scored 19 points on 6-17 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Anaias, Saunders scored 14, and senior guard Riley Welch added 10. Senior forward Emmanuel Aghayere led with eight rebounds off the bench, and Da'Shawn Cook added seven rebounds and four assists.

UMW shot 31.8% from the field (21-66), including 22.9% from three-point range (8-35). UMW went 14-20 from the free throw line (70%). Harrisburg shot 26-50 from the field (52%), making 6-18 three point tries and 17-26 free throws. Harrisburg held a 39-37 edge in rebounding.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
