Cook's Career High 38 Leads UMW Men Past Southern Va., 107-68, in CAC 1st Rd.

Sophomore guard Da'Shawn Cook netted a career-high 38 points, including 10 three pointers, to lead the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 107-68 win over Southern Virginia University on Saturday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 16-10 on the season, and advance to the semifinal round on Wednesday night at York College of Pa.

Cook made 13-20 field goals, including 10-17 three pointers, and also led the Eagles with eight assists. Sophomore Greg Rowson scored 16 points, while junior Anias Saunders scored 14. Juniors Drew Johnson and Riley Welch each added 11 to the Eagle attack.

UMW jumped out to an 8-0 lead early, with three pointers from Anias Saunders and Cook. After the Knights went on an 11-2 run to grab the lead with 14:59 left, Greg Rowson hit a three pointer to kickstart an 8-0 run, giving the Eagles an 18-11 edge with 11:00 left.

Sauunders hit a three and Drew Johnson added a three-point play to push the lead to 24-16 with 9:24 left before halftime, but the Knights used hot perimeter shooting to draw to within three at 24-21 with 8:23 left. Later, seven straight points returned the lead to ten, at 33-23, and a pair of Riley Welch three pointers pushed the lead to 16, at 41-25, with 3:59 to go.

Rowson and Cook hit triples to push the lead to 21, and Saunders capped the first half scoring with the Eagles taking a 50-30 advantage to intermission.

Cook remained hot in the second half, scoring 28 of his 38 points, making 8-12 shots, all from behind the three-point arc. The Eagles racked up 57 second half points.

Mary Washington shot 37-70 from the floor, making 23-45 three point shots and 10-13 free throws. Southern Va. shot 21-46 from the field, making 10-23 three point tries and added 16-28 from the charity stripe. The Eagles forced 25 turnovers.

The Eagles will visit York College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in semifinal action.
