Balanced Scoring Leads UMW Men’s Basketball Past SVU, 80-73, on Wednesday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Southern Virginia University, 80-73, on Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 13-9 overall, and 3-4 in the CAC. Sophomores Da'Shawn Cook and Greg Rowson scored 18 points a piece to pace the Eagles.

The Eagles took an early lead as they got up 9-3 just 3:20 into the game. Rowson knocked down a three-pointer to begin the game, Cook then scored four straight points, and then a layup from Trey Barber gave the Eagles the early points. SVU pulled within two, 14-12, but a three-pointer from Riley Welch and Drew Johnson extended UMW's lead to 20-12 with 10:08 to play.

Wayne Clevert drained a three-pointer with 4:51 left that pushed the Eagles to a 31-19 lead. With 3:47 remaining and the Eagles up 34-24, UMW closed the half on a 10-0 run to take a 44-24 lead at the break. Welch, Cook, and Barber helped spark the run at the end of the half.

Cook knocked down a three-pointer just 2:12 into the second to maintain the Eagles' lead at 49-30. SVU cut the lead to 14, 54-40, but another Clevert three-pointer extended the lead to 17 with 11:40 left. 

Anias Saunders scooped home a layup with 5:20 to play the kept the Eagles up 12, 67-55. SVU went on a 12-3 run to get within three points, 70-67, with just under three minutes remaining. A three-point play and then a free throw from Rowson extended the lead to 74-67 with just 1:15 left. UMW closed the game out from there to take the win 80-73.

Clevert went 5-8 from the three-point line to score 15 points. Welch added 14 points on 5-9 shooting from the field.

UMW shot 26-61 (42.6%) from the field, 14-35 (40.0%) from three-point range, and 14-17 (82.4%) from the free throw line. The Eagles out-rebounded the Knights 37-32.

UMW will be back in action on Saturday as they travel to St. Mary's for a game at 4 p.m.
