UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at CNU, 81-68, on Saturday Evening

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at Christopher Newport University, 81-68, on Saturday afternoon in Newport News, VA. The Eagles slip to 12-9 overall, and 2-4 in the CAC.

The Eagles opened up the game fast as Anias Saunders and Greg Rowson both knocked down three-pointers to give UMW a 6-1 lead just 1:42 in. With the game tied at eight a piece, Trey Barber scooped home a layup to put UMW up 10-8. From there, CNU went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead. 

With the Eagles trailing 30-14, Barber threw down a dunk to try and energize the UMW offense. With 2:07 remaining in the half, Riley Welch made a layup to put the score at 37-20. Welch scored the final points for the Eagles before the half and UMW found themselves down 42-25 at the half. 

Da'Shawn Cook knocked down a jumper two minutes into the second half to put the score at 47-31. Cook drained another pull-up jumper to pull the Eagles within 14. CNU went on another run and went up 62-41 with 10:55 to play in the game.

UMW kept fighting and cut the Captians' lead to 11, 66-55, as they went on a 14-4 run. Ra'Shawn Cook, Saunders, Rowson, and D. Cook all contributed points in the run. The Eagles to within 10, 72-62, on a R. Cook three-pointer with 2:58 to play. UMW came up just short in the end and couldn't pull any closer than 10.

D. Cook and Saunders led the team with 16 points each. R. Cook added 15 points off the bench. 

The Eagles shot 24-64 (37.5%) from the field, 5-23 (21.7%) from three-point range, and 15-22 (68.2%) from the free throw line. 

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will travel to Southern Virginia at 7 p.m.
