UMW Men’s Basketball Falls at York, 79-73, on Saturday Afternoon

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell at York College, 79-73, on Saturday afternoon in York, PA. The Eagles slip to 11-8 overall, and 1-3 in the CAC. Freshman Trey Barber led the team with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. 

Barber and Greg Rowson got the game going as they both scooped home layups in the first minute to put UMW up 4-0. Barber knocked down two free throws with 14:36 left in the first to tie the game at 11. With the Eagles trailing by one, 14-13, Barber scored seven straight points to give the Eagles a 20-14 advantage. 

Drew Johnson had a steal and layup to push UMW's lead to eight 25-17. The Spartans drew within just three points, 27-24, but two Da'Shawn Cook free throws and a three-pointer from Riley Welch put UMW back up eight. Ra'Shawn Cook drilled a three-pointer at the end of the half to give the Eagles a 37-29 lead. 

The Eagles began the second half with an 11-5 run that extended the Eagles' lead to 14, 48-34. Barber, D. Cook, and Rowson all contributed points in the run. Rowson drained a three-pointer with 14:56 to play in the second that kept UMW ahead by 10. York got back in the game and went down just two, 55-53, with 10:52 remaining in the game.

Anias Saunders nailed a three-pointer with 9:24 left that put the Eagles up 61-55. From there, York went on a 10-0 run to go ahead 65-61. D. Cook tied the game at 65 as he made four straight free throws. York went up 73-67 on a layup, but a key three-pointer by Rowson put UMW down just three with 44 seconds left. The Spartans made their free throws down the stretch to take the win.

D. Cook and Rowson both chipped in 15 points a piece. Saunders added nine points, seven assists, and six rebounds.

The Eagles shot 22-56 (39.3%) from the field, 13-31 (41.9%) from three-point range, and 16-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line.

UMW will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host Southern Virginia with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
